Dear Pastor Terry Jones

(an open letter)

I heard today on CNN that you said that your church would give up on the plan to burn the Qu’ran / Koran if God told you to. I just wanted to let you know that I spoke to God about this last night and I assure you he wants you to give up on the plan. In fact, the word he used was ‘repent’.

As we spoke he told me that he’s incredibly confused about how you’ve completely misappropriated the gospel of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus didn’t come to burn anyone’s holy book. He is wondering if you’ve been given a copy of the Gospels that has left out key phrases like, “Love your enemies.” Or “Bless those who curse you, do good to those who hurt you.”?

He seemed quite cross, the longer we spoke, about your whole attitude. He definitely wanted you to know that he loves you very much but he wants you to shepherd the flock he’s put you in in the way of Jesus and not the way of vengeance. He seems to feel that that’s still his territory and it would be wise to leave it to him. The Cross really did settle this and God regrets it if you didn’t get the memo on that.

So, just so you know, God says stop the crazy Pastor Terry. Try sharing the love of God through Jesus with people instead of intentionally being a jerk and pissing them off.

He really means it.

Brian
UPDATE: CNN is reporting that Pastor Terry Jones has called off the burning! Good on ya Terry Jones!

UPDATE on the update: Apparently now (Friday a.m.) Jones is “rethinking” the cancellation and is calling it a “suspension” and it may or may not still happen. Sigh.

Thanks for the comments! I’m praying for him to find the way out of this corner he’s painted himself into. Praying for people not to colour Jesus with this human brush.

“We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.”

Now that he has the worlds stage, perhaps he can exercise the power of love and not hate…
